WS's "Dee" Runnells wins Neighborhood Hero Award For 2007

Deloris “ Dee”
Runnells
Wilshire Square
Neighborhood Association
Dee Runnells has lived in the
Wilshire Square
neighborhood for many years. Since 1978,
Dee has been actively participating in
neighborhood meetings, and events, throughout the years she has worn many
hats. Some of her accomplishments have been as
Wilshire
Square’s Community Oriented Policing Liaison, Block Captain, as well as Area
and Citywide Board Member and organizer of the Santa Ana Police Department
Appreciation Luncheons.
Most recently,
Dee has recruited over 25 neighbors who have
graduated as SAFD’s Community Emergency Response Trainees. She encourages
each CERT graduate to take refresher classes in First Aid and CPR. She
serves as the neighborhood’s Com-Link Representative as well as serving on
the Traffic and Bylaws Committees. Her endless energy has allowed her to
give back to her neighborhood as well as her community; she also found time
to participate in the painting of her neighbor’s home through Paint Your
Heart Out.

Wilshire Square
Neighbors Volunteer for Paint Your Heart Out Santa Ana
On May 20 and June 6, 2006, three teams
representing the Wilshire Square Neighborhood Association joined 27 other
teams to prep and paint 30 homes in Santa Ana for low income seniors and
disabled homeowners. The Wilshire Square team captains were: Yvonne Hernandez,
Terry Miramontes, Mark and Mary Guzman.
The teams had many enthusiastic veteran volunteers from the 2004 inaugural
year of Paint Your Heart Out Santa Ana including Wilshire Square neighbor Doug
Simo. Students eager to earn Community Service hours for graduation
volunteered from Mater Dei, Saddleback, Century and the Santa Ana High School
of the Arts.
Gallons of paint brought smiles to homeowners faces, restored hope to
neighborhoods, and united neighbors and friends to brighten the future of
Santa Ana. Check out the website
